Du Pain et Des Idées is a bakery, or boulangerie, famous among foodies in Paris. This historical space near Canal Saint-Martin has been in business as a bakery since 1889. Current boulanger Christophe Vasseur produces superbly fresh and delectable assortment of baked goods that has foodies making the journey across town. Particularly famous is the Pain des Amis – thick slabs of bread with charred crusty crust surrounding a bubbly chewy center, reminiscent of rustic bread baked in wood fired ovens in the countryside.
Monsieur Vasseur has won numerous awards for his bread making, including the city’s best baker, “Meilleur Boulanger de Paris,” by the gourmet magazine Gault & Millaut in 2008. How about that for a guy who left a career in fashion in his 30’s to dedicate his life to the art of baking?
This boulangerie is also famous for its Galette des Rois, made without any artificial flavors and absolutely rich and flaky to the last bite.
